Why It’s Not Really About Them

Have you ever noticed how quickly you can go from calm to completely undone in response to your child’s behavior?

You’re not alone. Many moms come to me thinking that if their child would just behave differently, they wouldn’t yell, shut down, or spiral into guilt and frustration. So, they devour all the parenting books and listen to all the podcasts—searching for that golden strategy to “fix” their child.

But here’s the hard truth: it’s not really your child that’s triggering you.

Yes, your child might be melting down, talking back, or pushing every boundary. But if you pause long enough to look beneath the surface, what’s actually being triggered is something deeper inside of you—something that needs attention, healing, and truth.

Kids Will Be Kids

Children are immature by definition. They don’t yet have the tools to regulate emotions, navigate stress, or understand how their actions affect others. Expecting them to act like emotionally mature adults is unrealistic and unfair.

But here’s where the real shift happens: we’re the adults in the relationship. That means we are the ones responsible for our responses, even when their behavior is hard.

And that response? It’s often shaped more by our internal world than our child’s external behavior.

Your Body is Reacting to a Perceived Threat

Have you ever felt your heart race, your muscles tighten, or your voice rise before you even consciously knew you were angry? That’s your nervous system going into fight-or-flight mode. Your brain doesn’t distinguish between real danger (like a car crash) and perceived emotional danger (like your child yelling “I hate you” in the cereal aisle).

This is your body saying:

“I don’t feel safe.”
“I feel like I’m failing.”
“I’m out of control and I don’t know what to do.”

And guess what? That reaction was likely shaped by old beliefs—deep-rooted fears, unhealed pain, or ingrained patterns from your past. You didn’t choose it, but you are called to steward it.

Coaching Digs Deeper

In coaching, we often uncover that a child’s behavior is stirring up something much bigger—the mom’s own sense of self-worth, fear of failure, or unresolved guilt. It feels like your child is “making you” angry or anxious, but really, they’re just revealing what’s already inside.

That’s not shame—it’s an opportunity. You can’t heal what you won’t look at. But when you begin to recognize what’s underneath the trigger, you can start responding from truth instead of fear.

What Does God Want You to Hear in That Moment?

When you feel the tension rise and your body getting ready to lash out or shut down, ask:

“God, what do You want me to hear right now?”

Here’s what His Word might say:

  • “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
→ I am with you in the chaos.
  • “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.” (Psalm 28:7)
→ I am your protector—you don’t have to fight for control.
  • “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
→ Your worst moment doesn’t define you—My grace does.
  • “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)
→ You’re not alone in this—I am your safe place.
  • “You are precious and honored in my sight… I love you.” (Isaiah 43:4)
→ You are not failing—you are loved and chosen.

These verses aren’t just nice ideas—they’re neurobiological tools when spoken in faith. When your brain starts to spiral and your nervous system is overwhelmed, truth grounds you. Scripture slows the chaos and opens the door to peace.

What Happens Next

As you begin to pause, breathe, and invite God into the moment, your nervous system can calm down. You can begin to form new patterns—both spiritually and physiologically.

Your child doesn’t have to change for you to feel peace. You change—and the atmosphere of your home changes with you.
