How to Break Free from Survival Mode This Summer
There was a summer when I really thought I had it figured out.
I had the calendar blocked out with all the right things: playdates at the park, a few summer camps, some family road trips, a loose routine to keep us “on track,” and even some creative ideas for memory-making with my boys. I started the season feeling hopeful. I told myself I was ready. This would be the summer.
But two weeks in? The wheels came off.
The constant refereeing of sibling arguments, endless snack demands, and the feeling that I couldn’t keep my head above water—mentally or emotionally—sent me spiraling into frustration and self-doubt. I found myself thinking, Why do I even bother planning all this? No one appreciates it. I don’t even like who I am right now. And under all of it, if I’m being honest, I was angry… and tired. Really tired.
My intentional, well-planned summer was turning into a disaster. But it wasn’t a scheduling problem. It was a mindset problem.
I didn’t need another summer camp or a better behavior chart.
I didn’t need to “just stay calm” or get the kids outside more.
What I needed was to be transformed from the inside out.
What Is a Victim Mindset, Really?
Victim mindset sounds like:
“I have to do everything.”
“Nothing ever goes how I plan.”
“This is just my life now.”
“It must be nice to get a break.”
Victim mindset is not about real victimhood—it’s a mental state where we believe we are powerless to change our circumstances. It’s sneaky because it often sounds like truth: there are certainly things outside of our control! But what it’s actually doing is robbing us of joy and disconnecting us from the peace and purpose God has already made available to us through Jesus.
What Changed Everything
My breaking point came on a Friday night, standing in my kitchen making a homemade pizza for our traditional family night. Something that was supposed to feel fun had turned into chaos—again. The kids were melting down, I was overwhelmed, and I felt the same toxic thoughts rise up in my mind: “Why do I always have to be the one to make dinner? Why do they have to fight tonight? Can’t we just go out to eat for once? I’m so tired!”
And in that moment, I realized: I wasn’t showing up as the mom I wanted to be. I was parenting from a victim mindset. I was reacting to my circumstances and letting my thoughts run away from me, not leading them. And my emotions were what was cluing me into what was going on internally. I knew I wasn’t going to have a good evening with those thoughts running through my head. So, I recognized that I was tired, the kids were hangry, but regardless of those facts, I still had a choice of what I was going to believe and say to myself at that moment. I made the choice to think thoughts that better reflected the mom I wanted to be and the night I wanted to have. Empowered with those new thoughts, I made a decision to invite them in.
That was the beginning of a slow and steady journey back to truth.
One of the first things that helped? Reminding myself of Truths I had seeped my mind in earlier that day about who God says that I am. Spending just five intentional minutes soaking in Scripture that morning equipped me to “flip the script” in my mind with God’s Word. That’s why I created the Rooted Motherhood 5-Day Devotional—to help other moms start that same transformation by meditating on Truth.
It’s simple. It’s powerful. And it started to change everything for me.
Because here’s what I learned: when we operate from a mindset of victory instead of victimhood, we become unshakeable moms—not perfect but rooted and grounded in Christ.
You Don’t Need More Plans—You Need a New Mindset
So many moms approach summer by trying to schedule their way to sanity. I know, I was one!
And to be fair, structure helps. But a packed calendar doesn’t fix what’s going on in your heart.
The truth is:
Your burnout is not from your kids.
Your frustration is not from a lack of time.
Your weariness is not because you’re not doing enough.
It’s because you’re carrying the weight of motherhood in your own strength—without noticing the subtle lies that are shaping how you show up every day.
Lies like:
“I can’t do this.”
“I’m failing them.”
“This is hard.”
These thoughts don’t just make you tired. They make you ineffective. They keep you from stepping into your role as the spiritual thermostat of your home. They whisper that things will never change. And worst of all? They tell you that you’re stuck.
But sister—you are not stuck. You are not powerless. And you are definitely not alone.
How I Help Moms Shift from Stuck to Rooted
Over the last year, I’ve had the privilege of walking with Christian moms through this exact process inside my Rooted Motherhood Group Coaching program. I’ve seen moms go from yelling every day to calmly connecting with their kids. From drowning in guilt to standing confidently in their identity in Christ. From checking out emotionally to leading their homes with grace and purpose.
And you know what? It never started with a new parenting tactic.
It started with a single decision: to stop living in victim mode and start believing that God has more for me than survival.
This Summer, Make the Shift
That’s why I created the Unshakeable Mom Strategy Session—a one-time, deeply personalized coaching session where I help you uncover the mindset that’s keeping you stuck and map out a grace-filled, Scripture-rooted plan for how you can walk in peace, confidence, and joy this summer.
We’re not going to talk about how to color-code your calendar or keep your kids entertained.
We’re going to talk about your heart. Your thoughts. Your beliefs.
And we’re going to ask: What would shift in your home if YOU changed—not your kids, not your schedule—but your mindset?
You’ll walk away with:
- Fresh insight into what’s driving your reactions
- A personalized plan to reset your mindset daily
- Practical tools rooted in Scripture and brain science
- And the kind of peace that can’t be taken by a messy house or sibling fight
Ready to start? Book your session now for just $47 and take the first step toward a summer you’ll actually enjoy.
