A Better Strategy for Moms Who Want Peace

The sun is finally out, the school lunches are packed away, and the pool bags are by the door. It’s summertime. And for a lot of moms, that first week feels like a breath of fresh air. We dream of slower mornings, family adventures, spontaneous backyard play, and all the memory-making moments that we’re sure this summer will hold.

But then… the real summer hits.

The fridge is constantly empty. The kids are bickering by 9:00 AM. You’re trying to juggle housework, snacks, work-from-home calls, and managing meltdowns over popsicle colors. And suddenly that slow, simple summer starts to feel suffocating.

I remember a few summers ago, standing at the kitchen sink, tears in my eyes while the blender whirred in the background and the boys argued in the living room. I had planned all the things—swim lessons, vacation Bible school, park playdates, library reading programs, sports camps—hoping it would keep us busy, keep them happy, and keep me sane. But instead, I was more exhausted than ever and still short-tempered with the kids.

What I learned that summer changed everything: I didn’t need more things on the calendar. I needed a new heart.

What We Think We Need to Fix Summer

So often, we approach summer like a logistical problem to solve. If we just find the right mix of camps, playdates, and activities, we think we’ll avoid burnout and frustration. But here’s the truth: no amount of scheduling can fix a stressed-out, stretched-too-thin soul.

We try to fix the chaos outside of us while ignoring the chaos inside.

Here are some things moms often do to “survive” summer:

  • Fill every blank spot on the calendar with activities to keep kids busy
  • Hope that longer days = more patience (but forget that longer days = more hours of sibling bickering too)
  • Set up new chore charts or screen time limits to “regain control”
  • Count down the hours until bedtime (and feel guilty for doing so)

Now, some of those things can be helpful. We all need rhythms and routines! But none of them get to the root of our frustration—our mindset.

Because if we believe…

  • Our kids are the reason we’re overwhelmed
  • We’re “bad moms” when we lose patience
  • Summer is something we just have to survive…

…then no schedule or strategy is going to bring peace.

From Survival to Steady: A Better Mindset for Summer

In my blog post Spring Cleaning the Survival Mindset, I shared how God walked me out of a season of just trying to “make it through.” That work didn’t come through better plans or productivity hacks—it came through heart work.

The same is true for summer.

You don’t need more time away from your kids to enjoy your summer—you need a renewed mindset for how you show up with them.

Let me give you a practical example.

Let’s say your mindset right now is:

“If the kids would just stop fighting, I could enjoy this day.”

What happens? You spend the day reacting to every argument. You grit your teeth, try to referee, and wonder why you’re so worn out.

Now imagine if your mindset shifted to:

“Every conflict is an opportunity to help my kids grow—and God is growing me too.”

Same day. Same kids. Totally different heart and thoughts. You’re not thrown by the chaos because you expected it—and you entered the day with the tools to stay grounded.

That’s what I want for you this summer.

What You Really Need This Summer

Mama, the secret to an unshakeable summer isn’t a better activity list—it’s a steady heart.

It’s learning how to:

  • Ground your emotions in God’s Truth, not your kids’ behavior
  • Belief that you can with God’s help
  • Belief that your children are growing with the Holy Spirit and the skills you are teaching them
  • Let go of mom-guilt and comparison when the plans don’t go perfectly
  • Create a rhythm that nurtures peace in your home—not chaos

And that’s exactly what I want to help you do.
